Tonight, on our evening walk before bedtime, it was foggy (being warmish for this time of year, and certainly compared to the weekend's high temperatures in the 30s/single digits). Foggy nights enhance the carrying of sounds from afar, as you know, Bob. When the fire trucks went past, they were not in the neighborhood, although they might have been as close as two streets over; I suspect they were a little further away at this point in our walk.

We'd gone down the hill, taken the left option towards the elementary school (we spit upon it, in memory of what they did to Sonny), crossed away from the cursed school, past the house with the Xmas lights and music (not timed to the lights, alas), and around back to the original road -- all this by request of the canines setting the pace and direction.

There we were, starting up the lower hill, towards that intersection where we'd turned left, and the sirens were approaching our part of the world, drawing even with us. It was then that I heard the soft bark/howl on my other side; I thought it was the small dog that belonged to the house we were currently passing. It wasn't until the howl got louder, along with the sirens, that I realized it was Athena.

I looked at her, she looked at me as she raised her muzzle and howled. It was a better howl than Rusty ever did, as he could only copy other dogs and sounded more like a demented cow at his best. It wasn't as good as Nannie's old dog, may she rest in peace; Lady lived down the street from the fire house and howled like a coyote.

This was the first howl I've heard from either of them, and now that Honey's back home from her meeting, I have to go tell her about it.

Oddly enough, as we approached the house and yet another set of sirens raced past, this time on a street perpendicular to us, she didn't howl. I suppose the sirens have to be parallel. What a smart dog!
