Larchmont Lockjaw
Sep. 27th, 2008 10:05 pmAs asked by Justine Larbalestier: I am wondering if this is the Larchmont that the term Larchmont lockjaw comes from."
Yes, Larchmont, NY, is the home of one form of preppie accent, the Larchmont Lockjaw. If you remember Thurston Howell III from Gilligan's Island, that was essentially the LL. Real people did speak like that; I actually met one on St. Kitts (a medical student preparing for his boards, not one of Us). It's one of the strangest preppie accents I've known. I went to prep school in the Fairchester League, so I did hear/see a few of them.
