Over on DailyKos, a union member wrote to the head of the Steelworkers Union for information on Todd Palin as a union fellow.

Statement by USW International president Leo W. Gerard on John McCain’s selection of Sara Palin as his running mate:

"It is important to realize that while the governor’s husband is a member of a union, this does not automatically qualify her for an on-the-job training program to become a heartbeat away from the presidency. And while her husband is one of 850,000 dues-paying members of the steelworkers union, it does nothing to absolve Sen. McCain of his long history of anti-union sentiment and anti-worker actions, including continuously pushing an anti-working family agenda that:

*Opposes giving workers the right to bargain collectively;

*Jeopardizes retirement security by privatizing social security;

*Further threatens job security by signing more job-stealing trade deals without the regard to human rights and environmental abuses; and,

*Erodes the ability of working families to secure quality health care by taxing their employer -provided coverage for both active and retired workers.

McCain’s choice is another example of his poor judgment and his desire to play politics as usual. McCain-Palin is not a team that works for working families. The first-term governor’s record is thin and divisive. And John McCain has a life-long record of being for the rich and powerful. No union card can hide that any more than Ronald Regan's union card did."

Nice. Union leadership so not for McPain.

I wonder sometimes at how much the Dessicated Zombie underestimates people (and depresses me that he may be right).

I mean, he has a woman as a running mate - does he REALLY think that the mere fact she's female will secure the female vote? Does he think women won't look at her record and his party's record?

And the idea that her husband being in a union is going to secure the union vote? Please, like organised labour is ever going to back the Republicans and Mr. "can't remember how many houses he has" McSame

One thing that may undepress you: the day after Palin's little presentation, donations to the Obama/Biden campaign reached $10 million. (I realize that's nothing in pounds or euros, but it's still helpful.) That fact reminded me that I haven't yet donated to any campaign, and by golly it's about time I did.

I wonder if there are any restrictions on non-citizens donating? I've never thought of that before.

Anyway, the Desiccated One and the Caribou Barbie are preaching to a tiny choir of "righteous" people. If you looked around during Palin's speech, you could see that the arena was mostly empty -- all the "crowds" were down on the floor near the podium. I think there's quite a few Republicans who don't like either McCain or Palin, for one reason or another. Sure, there are women who want to cast their historic vote for a woman running for VP -- only she's not the first one to run (Hello Geraldine Ferraro!) and not even the second to run (Hello women who ran for obscure tickets! I voted for one or two of youse over the years, so I know you were out there!), so there's only one historic note: she's the first Republican woman to be on a major ticket. Late to the party again, eh GOPs?

I think the majority of the GOP are staying away from this election because they know (1) 8 years of Republican control have gone down the tubes, (2) Bush is extremely unpopular and has been at those low low levels for many moons now, (3) Obama and Biden are tapping into the great disaffection of the citizenry.

I think McPain's comments about "community organizers" will come back to bite them. The best response I've seen is "Jesus Christ was a community organizer. Pontius Pilate was a governor."
