I really feel for the veterinarians who have been treating him and worrying obsessively about him since May. It's a huge let-down to lose your patient after so long. It's almost a physical reaction. I know they were obsessing over his treatment, and probably no more than in the past few weeks. He was almost ready to be sent home, and then the setbacks began.

It's a major bummer to lose Barbaro now, to the complications of his injury. His owners were so nice to keep him going, and I know they faced their worst fears last night. I hope they can take some comfort in knowing that he was kept free from pain and was given absolutely the best fighting chance to heal from this kind of devastating injury.

We've learned a lot from Barbaro. In his name, let other horses recover from similar injuries.
