Nov. 16th, 2008 10:08 pmTonight we watched the documentary on Jonestown, Guyana. It was a two-hour retrospective, and I realized that not only had I forgotten a lot, there were details that I'd never known. Much of the information was buried by the awfulness of the mass killing, but the accounts from the survivors left us all teary.
Tim Carter, a Vietnam veteran with a wife and son there, watched as his baby boy and wife took the poison and died in his arms.
Eugene Smith also lost his wife and son, and never remarried.
Jackie Speier nearly died on that airstrip and now serves as Congresswoman from Leo Ryan's district.
Patty Parks didn't survive her defection, and her children saw her brains on the airplane.
It was just an amazing documentary, and I'm glad they got footage from the survivors as well as the footage that was made during that trip.
