So, yesterday afternoon, the Sonny was encouraged by the Ex to go hang out with the Church Youth Group at the ice skating rink, with predictable results: he fell and injured his knee. I was off having fun with the FG, shopping for various things, and had to treat him over the phone until I could get there for some physical assessment and bandaging. Ex sent me a photo over the phone, so I knew it wasn't just a little injury. Yes, I told her to do the RICE thing and she did.

I swung by my house, grabbed my crutches from five or six years ago, and met her at the drugstore where she was attempting to find the right tape.

His knee was quite swollen, warm, and painful. He'd been painful enough to break out into a cold sweat with nausea, always a good sign. Not! Anyhow, I did a quick exam, couldn't find a positive Anterior Drawer Sign, wrapped his knee with tape, showed him how to use the crutches, and propped him back up on the pillows with his foot nice and high. He was cranky by then, because it was bedtime, but we got him chivvied back into place. He whined about not being able to stay like this all night. Poor baby!

After that, I went back to my car where FG was patiently waiting so we could drive back to her place. We had a lovely late dinner, and read together in bed before we went to sleep. Oh, I almost forgot to mention: it's been one year since we met in person. :-)

I knew I'd have to pick him up from school after his biology exam, but at 6:30, Ex texted me to say she didn't think he should go to school at all because of his pain and lack of sleep. I agreed, and went to get him from her place instead, so he could rest a bit more at my place. He slept until about noon, then we left for his previously-scheduled appointment with his orthopod (for a recheck of his spine). When we got there, they could see his crutches, so we got a knee radiograph added to his scheduled spine rads, and later after the doc had seen him, they got us into the MRI as well. We'll have results in a day or so, I hope. I also hope we don't need any surgery, but it's possible he injured his ACL.

But wait! It gets better: the FG called me as I was driving to pick him up this morning: she'd just learned that her dad died suddenly. While I was waiting with Sonny for his radiographs, her daughter was taking her to the airport, so she could catch the red-eye to Ukraine. It's a twelve hour (and something) flight to Kiev, and a 26+ hour flight back. Oy.

I'm taking care of her cat, who is the bother (sic) of Cleo, sitting right next to me (ok, sleeping).

And, to top it all off, today was a mean, miserable cold and rainy day. Gee, thanks Mother Nature! I couldn't even bring enough tea along for the day.

Ah, well. Tomorrow, I will pick himself up from school, take him to his scheduled appointment with his therapist, after which the Ex will take him to his group session. I'll have some time to shop for the T-day fixings, since we'll be travelling up to the folks on Thursday after all.
