Ah, the Glorious 25th! Were you there?

Thirty years ago, Star Wars opened. I remember seeing that movie in the summer of 1977, one of the few things I remember from that year. After my grandfather died in March, I was a little numb. Sometime in June my parents packed us into the car, drove to a movie theater we had never been to before (it had the large screen for extra viewing pleasure), and I had no clue what we were going to see. When the words marched off into the distance, it was intriguing. When the ships came over our heads, my jaw hit the floor and I was spell-bound. I'll never forget the feeling of that first magical moment.

That movie was just beyond spectacular -- music, special effects, acting and story were superb. Alec Guinness may have hated being known only for his role as Obi-Wan, but because of his expertise he brought depth to the character. Someday I will see his other films, just to watch him at work in his craft.

I haven't even bothered to watch the last few Star Wars movies. There's no magic in them anywhere. Sadly, this is what my son thinks of when he hears "Star Wars". Poor child.
